academy and gibson

DATE: Fall 07
DESCRIPTION: After an investigation of a city block of Austin (South Congress, between Academy and Gibson) I created a visual essay of 10 images that I felt best represented the block, as well as feature what I most enjoyed about my experience there.

I wanted to highlight the graffiti on this eclectic block, an aspect that the city pays thousands of dollars a year to remove. To “glamorize” this unwanted aspect that I enjoyed, I photographed areas of the block, highlighted the graffiti, trash, and flyers in color and dusted the colored parts with glitter in an attempt to make what the city considers ugly “pretty.”

Finally I framed what I considered to be “works of art” in gaudy, gold antique frames to further exaggerate this idea of graffiti as “art.”
